Leaders Must Listen More

In his quest to set a tone or direction of tenure of holding office or employment, many people seem to try to reinvent the wheel unnecessarily, and do things their way, the abandonment of the lessons can have on past. Many of these leaders seem to isolate themselves from their constituents, and the status of their ivy towers, and only discuss things with a small elite group of advisors. The main drawback is that these elites often look to a very different organization of the masses, and therefore a leader's message is communicated, and / or a course of action to take, often do not identify with constituents. The obvious result of this is "off" members and potential members and sponsors and potential sponsors (or parties). Each organization must have volunteers and the participation of its members, and if the leader is not the "message", this becomes a challenge. Epicetus wrote: "We have two ears and one mouth so we can listen twice as much as we speak." Unfortunately, many individuals trained and qualified to ascend to leadership positions, and are often more concerned about hearing speech (and only your opinion) to address the real needs of the organization and its components.

1. How can an effective leader for the true needs of your organization if you just talk to constituents, rather than listening to them? Many of these leaders seem to want to discourage open discussion (and especially any kind of disagreement), and therefore significantly reduce the bidirectional communication. They feel that communication is simply to give a speech on any topic you consider important.

2. In recent years there has been an excessive reliance on the use of media for communication. Although there is certainly a place for Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, MySpace, etc, these should not be the vehicle of communication. In too many organizations, leaders have come to use Facebook ads, for example, to communicate with its members. By far the most effective vehicles is a leading digital media to create a blog for messages in a specified period, regular, and encourages members to feedback. The leader should not ignore the comments, but then address the concerns and comments of a positive and constructive and meaningful in future communications.

3. Why do so many people in positions of leadership rely heavily on the use of email? All studies indicate that although they are undoubtedly great applications for e-mail, there is nothing better than face to face communication, where the leader listens, rather than just talk. Most people are tired of empty rhetoric, and are much more concerned with what a leader will do to meet your needs, or respond to their concerns. Only by listening effectively can address a true leader and fully understand these concerns.

Over the past three decades, in addition to working with and advising leaders, I have noticed a general decline in the quality of the volunteer leaders. For many reasons, including lack of adequate training and training, one of my biggest disappointments have become leaders who simply do not listen effectively.
