The first thing a leading designer makes when putting pen to paper on a home design is finding out exactly who will live in that house - the exact demographic of the population. This is especially true in the kitchen, which is usually the most time in space of the house and around which many other activities happening now more than just cooking. Fortunately, today's population in the 'mass market, "the kitchen is easy to define - it's mostly" baby boomers "aged 55-65, followed by' leading GenX'ers' between 45-55 years old . These two demographics between them constitute the bulk of people looking to design a kitchen instead of just taking what comes with a new home. People over 65 years, the 'seniors' are no longer home dominant proprietary demographic and not spend much time in the kitchen, while those under 45 are considered entry level and the owners are not as numerous as the first two.
Activities in and around the kitchen
Cooking a baby boomer is likely to have a large flat screen TV as part of what is easily visible from several areas of activity that surrounds it. The kitchen is no longer a "space" but a space around which a lot of family activity tour. This activity can be video games, watching the news, data search and even do homework with access to the outdoor grill and cover a step or two away. The common factor is that everything revolves around the kitchen. This often manifests itself in a "room" or area with sitting and lying furniture in the room of the family joined the kitchen with a casual 'dining room', both divided and united by a peninsula of cabinetry, perhaps with a sink and stove in one side and an open area on the other with high stools for children to do their homework or simply to help make dinner.
The baby boomers are no longer willing to risk a back injury by bending down to open the oven door and wall ovens have probably installed a carefully measured height. Similarly, the boom efficiency insist on demanding the pantry near the hand at most 3 or 4 steps, not in another room, and certainly not behind another door. This can manifest itself as another "area" adjacent to the areas of cooking, perhaps with a wall that separated them from overhead cabinets and open spaces from both areas.
The GenX'er is even more technologically savvy and may have several devices connected to the internet with sensors and alarms to remind and warn of upcoming events, as a "cake is ready" message flashing on the TV screen throughout the home. She may change in the oven with your phone on your way home from work and adjust the temperature of baked fish, when it is 10 minutes. Their priority is to "get it done fast" and therefore, all appliances will probably be some fuel to double, all with control panels that work just touch the screen of your phone, perhaps with the same Operating System (IOS, Android, webOS or some other new OS).
All this is very exciting for the design of the kitchen and there is no doubt that something will become the de facto standard, if not already.
